Root canals become necessary when the pulp of a tooth that fills the root becomes inflamed or infected. This can happen due to a deep, decayed cavity or from trauma to the tooth. A root canal saves the natural tooth, and with the crown that is placed after the procedure, a natural looking smile.

During the procedure your dentist will remove the pulp from the tooth and then clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth before refilling it with a material that is similar to rubber.
